Heat Treating
Almost all the sapphires in the world go through a heat treating process which improves the clarity of the stone and often intensifies the color. This change is within the entire stone, not just on the outer surface of the stone, as are some other enhancement processes used for other gemstones. This is a highly specialized process that is not done through average jewelry stores, and because there are sapphire deposits in Montana, you may prefer to get your sapphire heat treated in the state where they are found. It can be extremely difficult to find a heat treater, and we use highly skilled and experienced resources for our heating.
Occasionally a stone does not require heating, and we will advise you of that at the time the stone is evaluated.
The cost for heat treating is $6. per carat, with a 5 carat minimum, plus shipping.
Cutting
The shape of the sapphire best determines how the stone should be cut, to get the best color, clarity and carat weight. The average stone is usually best cut in a round brilliant pattern, and the average cost for this cut is $40.00. However, at the time of evaluation, we can tell you what the different options will be for the best cut for your stones.
Insurance and shipping will be added to cutting costs.
